Saad ni Labor Attache to Rome, Alicia D. Santos: "The quota for 3,000 OFWs was affirmed in a meeting between the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) and Italy's Ministero del Lavoro e delle Politiche Sociali (Ministry of Labor and Social Policy) recently."
Dugtong pa ni Santos: "The allocation for 3,000 OFWs is contained in that country's draft Decree on Immigration Quota for Non-European Citizens. However, no submission or processing, and no desegregation, shall yet take place pending the issuance or official publication of the Italian decree."
"The 3,000 slots include 1,000 opportunities classified as Subordinato including managers and skilled workers, while the rest are in Domestic, and Stagionale or seasonal categories. For proper processing, the employment documents/contracts in Italy will first be sent through the Philippine Embassy and the POLO for verification, authentication and documentation. Then, the documents will be sent to the Italian Embassy in the Philippines for visa processing, and to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to ensure proper documentation and exit procedures. Upon the arrival of the OFW in Italy, he or she shall report to the Sportello Unico (Piazza de Cristofores, No. 3, Rome), where there is a Ministero del Lavoro office, within eight days. The OFW shall then proceed to the Questura for the Permesso di Soggiorno that is required for his or her legitimate employment in Italy," ayon kay Santos.
Sabi niya, "The only fault of many Filipinos including the women, who were arrested in Malaysia, was to look for employment without proper working documents."

QUOTES of the Week: "There is a brighter prospect ahead as more jobs are projected to be generated this year and in the next four years in the agribusiness, cyber services, hotel and restaurant, creative services, medical tourism, health services, mining, and aviation industries, and in overseas employment." (Wika ni Labor Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Tomas)
"The transformation of the Philippine Postal Bank into an OFW Bank signifies the profound appreciation of the Philippine government to its citizens working overseas and their families here at home. President Arroyo said the new OFW Bank would charge less service fees in handling the remittances of its OFW clients. Given the vital role that OFWs play in strengthening the peso and shoring up international dollar reserves, it is only fitting that they are given access to a bank that will attend to their special needs. The President was pleased with the report of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Marianito Roque of an P8 billion surplus last year compared to a net loss before she came into power. Labor Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Tomas has recommended that P1 billion in equity be contributed by OWWA to the Postal Bank. That recommendation has been approved by the Cabinet and will soon be carried out by OWWA." (Wika ni Press Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye)
